Chances are you remember a time when you were a kid and teams were picked on the playground for whatever sport you were playing. Some kids were lock-ins for early picks and some waited a long time only to be an afterthought, if not a concession, for most teams. Whether you were picked was a function of your popularity, your athletic prowess and your team-player potential (among other less important things). Looking at Social Networks and Knowledge-sharing communities, the same dynamics are at work.
You can choose to be a part of any discussion board or social networking group but if you're not participating, you're not relevant. And even if you're participating, you're less than relevant if you're providing misinformation on those boards. That's why choosing what you're involved in and what you participate in is important; don't show yourself as having your pants down if you can help it and choose to participate in what is meaningful to you. You're hedging your bet towards places where you can add (and get) value
